Hinsdale County is one of the most remote and roadless counties both in Colorado and the entire country. With only 0.75 inhabitants per square mile, it is the most sparsely populated county in Colorado. With a 2010 population of just 843, Hinsdale is the third-least populous county in the state.
Lake City serves as the county seat and is the only incorporated municipality. Named for former Lt. Governor of Colorado, George A. Hinsdale, the county is covered by several different national forests and wilderness areas, as well as many mountains, including multiple fourteeners. The Silver Thread Scenic Byway passes through Hinsdale County.
