Constructed in 1962, the US Air Force Cadet Chapel is one of the most recognizable buildings in the state. Thanks to its unique architecture, this chapel is also one of the most visited man-created places in the Centennial State.
It is thought to be one of the most extraordinary American architecture instances in the modern world. For those who wish to explore the building without traveling to Colorado Springs, the chapel’s website has a virtual 360-degree tour. It’s within the US Air Force Academy property.
Note: The US Air Force Cadet Chapel is closed for repairs, with an estimate of being complete by sometime in 2023.
The Chapel
The chapel’s structure is made from glass, steel, and aluminum used to form the impressive 17 spires that reach up to 150 feet tall. Cadet Chapel functions as an all-faith facility and can host several services from different religions in different parts of the building.
The three unmistakable rooms in the structure are the Catholic chapel, which seats 500 attendees, a Jewish chapel, which seats 100, and a Protestant chapel that seats 900. Additionally, there is also an all-faith room.
Cadets are given time each day to attend services if they wish as well as participate in counseling, which is also available in the chapel.
Furthermore, the chapel also organizes the Special Programs in Religious Education. SPIRE, as it’s abbreviated to, is comprised of groups from seven different religious faiths and acts as the USAF’s most significant religious education program.
Weddings are also performed in the chapel for those who qualify: graduates of the academy, purple and silver heart recipients, active duty personnel assigned to the academy, and dependants of those active-duty members assigned to the academy.
Nature Trail
There is a paved nature trail to the east of Cadet Chapel for visitors who wish to take a memorable and scenic walk on campus. While the path is only one-third of a mile long, it involves going through some challenging terrain and hills.
Combined with the high altitude of Colorado Springs, tourists from out of state are advised to drink lots of extra water. The walk to the visitor center from the chapel is mostly uphill, so people with physical restrictions should keep this in mind. It should also be mentioned that large backpacks, luggage, and animals are not permitted inside the visitor center.
