The Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is made up of 14,000 public acres that are managed by the BLM, with another 160 acres run by the city Gunnison. Named after the Hartman family, who were some of the first pioneers in the area during the early days, this recreation area is located just outside of Gunnison.
Activities
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is considered to be one of the county’s best-kept secrets, as the rocky desert-like terrain provides some great opportunities for a range of outdoor recreation and sports.
Motorcycling & ATV Riding
Motorcycles are permitted on 44 miles of the roads, about 98% of the road available. Several courses at the base, including the Ridge Trail and Golf Course trail, prohibit this type of riding. ATVs and 4Wheel Driving are also allowed on all 45 miles of road and are allowed on the Terrain Park by the McCabe Lane entrance.
Mountain Biking
Bikers are drawn to Hartman Rocks for the 45 miles of single-track trails. The difficulty level for each course is posted at the front of the trailhead.
It’s essential to remember that several people may use a trail at once, so being alert of your surroundings is very important. The trails are fun ways to challenge one another and practice rollers and fun berms. Furthermore, at the base of the recreation center, there is a jump park.
Horse Riding
There are several named routes for horse riding, but when the trails are muddy in the springtime, it might be best to avoid them. Also, keep in mind that the single-track trails are heavily trafficked, so keep an eye out for others.
Rock Climbing
Rock climbers are welcome to scale the granitic ridge where several designated routes are established. Climbers need to keep in mind that they are climbing at their own risk, as the bolts and anchors are not maintained. During particular times of the year, certain routes are temporarily closed to cater to the cliff-nesting birds and their babies.
Cross Country Skiing
During the winter, 16 of the trails are groomed for cross country skiing that is suitable for both traditional and skate skiing. People are encouraged to stay on the marked trails to avoid disturbing the winter wildlife.
Hiking & Camping
Hiking is done throughout the recreation area, but the Golf Course Trail is one of the only ones that is specifically set aside for foot traffic and horses. Keep in mind to stay on marked trails so that new paths don’t disrupt the natural area.
Recreational camping is limited to up to two weeks at any of the 50 campsites, which already have established fire rings. Due to there being limited natural firewood, it’s a good idea to bring your own.
If you’re the type of person who seeks out adventure, the Hartman Rock Recreation Area should be at the top of your itinerary when visiting Gunnison. Boasting plenty of space for a myriad of outdoor activities, make sure to plan a day trip to Hartman Rock, or extend your expedition and spend the night!
