Do you have a need for speed? If so, this is Northeast Colorado racetrack is for you. Julesburg Drag Strip, located off of US-138 in Julesburg, is the oldest drag racing track in the country.
The Platte Valley Custom Club conducted races on the runway of the Julesburg Municipal Airport in 1959 and it’s been a hit ever since. In 1961, they held their first NHRA-sanctioned races and are still sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to this day. In 2018, they celebrated 60 years of racing at the same location. That’s a lot of history.
NHRA Racetrack in Julesburg
The track itself is a quarter-mile strip where no one can go faster than an 8.5 second elapsed time. That means you’ll see some cars or dragsters reach up to 150-160 miles per hour.
These aren’t your average, every day grocery-getters. They’re machines that are specifically built to get from the starting line to the finish line as quickly as possible. For some cars, that means upwards of 1,000 horsepower!
When there’s a lull in the action, take a walk around the pits and meet the drivers, take a peek in the cars and smell the burnt rubber. You can grab a bite to eat at their on-site restaurant. Burgers, fries, Frito pie and more! They also have restrooms with full running water and showers.
Racer Classifications Open to All Drivers
If you’re looking to take a spin down the track, Julesburg Drag Strip is open to all racers, whether you are part of their points program or not. They have several classes you can participate in.
