Spinney Mountain State Park – Lake George

Spinney Mountain State Park
Spinney Mountain State Park in Lake George.

Spinney Mountain State Park features the 2,500-acre Spinney Mountain Reservoir, a Gold Medal fishing spot. The closest towns to Spinney Mountain Reservoir are Hartsel to the west and Lake Geroge back to the east over Wilkerson Pass.

While the park doesn’t offer camping, it’s fantastic for fishing, boating, hiking, and hunting.  During the winter, the park closes once the lake freezes. Situated in Park County, facilities include boat ramps, a park office (at Eleven Mile), and picnic sites.

It’s located just west of Eleven Mile State Park, which offers over 300 campsites for anyone interested in staying the night. Colorado Springs is a good hour’s drive back east, first up over Wilkerson Pass to the town of Lake George.

Activities at Spinney Reservoir

Pike San Isabel Village
Spinney Mountain lies behind Spinney Reservoir in the distance.

Boating: The 2,500-acre reservoir is open to boating from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Water/body contact sports like scuba diving, swimming, and water skiing are prohibited. Sailboarding is common with wind gusts of 30-40 mph expected.

Camping: While camping is not permitted at Spinney Mountain, there are 300 sites at Eleven Mile State Park.

Equipment Rental: Canoes and kayaks are available as well as a 20′ pontoon and a 16′ Lund aluminum V-Hull.

Fishing: The reservoir is great for golf-medal fishing, including trophy-sized trout and northern pike. Fishing is limited to flies and lures only. While there is no ice fishing permitted in the winter, you can head to the nearby Eleven Mile State Park if you wish to cast a line. In addition to the lake, there is river fishing behind the dam.

Hiking: There are no official hiking trails, but it can still be done along the river or a long hike around the reservoir. Pets are welcome in the park.

Hunting: The park allows big and small game as well as waterfowl hunting during the appropriate seasons. Jackrabbits and coyotes are abundant and for those looking for larger game, mule deer are located in the park.

Picnicking: There are over a dozen picnic sites with tables and grills on both sides of the reservoir.

Winter Recreation: The park is closed during the winter.
