The landmark hotel was built in 1887 by Henry Strater, a Cleveland pharmacist who had a vision of a grand hotel in Durango. He was indeed right because once it opened, locals would close their homes during winter and check in to the hotel.

Over the years, the Strater Hotel had gone under renovation with 93 rooms uniquely decorated individually. The hotel lobby was also redesigned as well as the Office Spiritorium and the Mahogany Grille Restaurant. The Strater is also a charter member of the Historic Hotels of America since 1989.
