Tucked away in Southwest Colorado just east of Cortez, Phil’s World Trail System is one of the top mountain biking spots in the entire state. Ride through this unique high desert topography featuring big boulders, mesas, evergreen forests, and stunning vistas.
This federal land is run by the Bureau of Land Management and is considered one of the BLM’s “Backyard to Backcountry” treasures. The bike trail runs along the top of a mesa and is comprised of mostly single-track dirt trail, with some thrilling slickrock as well.
All levels of riders will be able to find a trail for them, ranging in difficulty from beginner to advanced. The bulk of the mountain bike trails are just a little bit technical with few uphill sections. It’s a fun place for mountain biking starting about four miles from Cortez, Colorado.
The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) and the Tres Rios BLM Field Offices, both based out of Dolores, CO, helped to build the Phil’s World Trail System
Phil’s World Trail System operates all year long from January 1st through December 31st. It’s free to ride and features 27 miles of trails. The elevation gain/loss is over 2,000 feet.
Getting There
From Cortez — There are multiple trailheads to start from east and northeast of town. The quickest way is to take Highway 160 east from Cortez for approximately 3 miles. Look for Road 30.1 by the Montezuma County Fairgrounds. Follow this road, which leads shortly to the trailhead.
