If you were looking for an exciting, alternative hobby to do on a weekend, you could’ve checked out the Downtown Art Gallery and Axe Room, DAGAR, in Denver. This place introduced everyone to the art of axe throwing.
It’s supposed to be a simple concept: get an axe and throw it at the target. However, people who have tried it attested to the thrill of the game (especially those who join in the axe-throwing competition).
The target was about 36 inches and the goal was to hit the bull’s eye. There was also scoring for each throw. A player had to throw five times and the maximum score for each set is 25.
DAGAR Axe Throwing in Downtown Denver

Dagar offered to book for groups, individual coaching for three hours, and custom schedule requests. The business prided itself on being a veteran-owned and operated SME. The founders had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army before meeting each other in a finance school. A few years later, Dagar was formed out of their own passion for community building and axe throwing.
Dagar’s Denver location was its very first branch and they had hopes of opening up new doors all over Colorado. Aside from axe throwing, people could come in at Dagar and just watch other enthusiasts enjoy the sport. The place also offered beer and art in this location so was a great place to hang out and chill.
Dagar was also open to collaboration with local artists. The owners wanted to give a platform for artists “who haven’t yet reached the stage where they’re represented by a traditional gallery” and wanted to use Dagar’s community for exposure. Though Dagar opened its arms to artists, they noted that they “don’t intend to ever be” an official gallery.
They just wanted to be a part of the community and become a “stepping stone” for promising artists around Denver.
