Kannah Creek – near Mesa County

FacebookTwitter

The Kannah Creek, a tributary of the Gunnison River and one of the essential water sources for the city of Grand Junction, is roughly 8 miles long and is located about 25 miles south of Grand Junction, CO.

The creek is technically a watershed that becomes a frozen reservoir in the winter and melts during the spring, giving visitors a ton of options for outdoor recreation on the water during warmer months.

Kannah Creek Route

The Kannah Creek begins 25 miles south of Grand Junction and flows east past Highway 50, shifting north through Mesa County and ending at Carson Lake.

Activities on the Kannah Creek

The creek and its tributaries create four main trails where visitors can hike, camp, fish, and bike. For those looking for some time on the water, kayaking and canoeing are often done in a handful of sites in the lower basin.

The creek’s environment is also known for its abundance of wildlife, with everything from bighorn sheep to lynx and a variety of predator birds.

The best time to visit Kannah Creek is during May and June, but it heavily depends on how much snowmelt and rain occur. When the area receives a lot of water, flash floods can occur. Kannah Creek’s water quality is exceptionally clear, but unfortunately, it’s not suitable to drink without purifying it first.
