Ski and snowshoe across premier groomed cross-country trails near the city of Gunnison. The Gunnison Nordic Club aims to encourage Nordic skiing via its large network of trails in Hartman Rocks as well as other places down the valley.
The nearby Crested Butte Nordic Center similarly grooms 60 kilometers of terrific trails within the upper Gunnison Valley. A few forest service roads remain unmaintained in the winter. Such roads are converted into multi-use areas that offer access into the backcountry.
Trails range from easy to difficult. Daily lessons, tours, and camps are available all through the season. There’s also a free waxing facility, with rentals and demos of Nordic equipment at the Jorgensen Complex.
