Not to be confused with the county by the same name, Kiowa, CO, is an eastern plains town of around 723 residents in 2010. It lies at an elevation of 6,378 feet, about 30 minutes east of Castle Rock.
The home rule municipality is the county seat of Elbert County, but not the most populated city – that’s Kiowa. There are a few commercial businesses in town.
Kiowa was named for the Native Kiowa tribe. It was first settled in 1859 and called Wendling by a resident, then named Middle Kiowa from 1860s to 1912. In December of 1912 the town was incorporated and “Middle” was removed from the name. There was a huge flood in the region in 1935.
