Mount Cameron – near Alma

FacebookTwitter

Seated center stage of three anchoring peaks, Mount Cameron is surprisingly not ranked as an official 14er despite reaching 14,238 ft! Due to the lack of a 300โ€™ prominence into the saddle, this mountain has not been classified amongst its neighbors.

A Class 2 mountain, many still seek out and climb this peak making it a busy place year-round.With the discovery of silver in 1874, mining dominated the area and to this day has running mines. Most of the immediate mountain area had been sectioned off by private landowners who have mining facilities.

In 2005 came to an agreement with the town of Alma, Colorado that some areas could be opened for recreational use. A nominal fee is required as an attempt to curb possible liabilities.

Trail Routes

There are 2 trail routes to choose from: The West Ridge and Combo Loop.

The Combo Loop is what takes hikers through the Decalibron and is a 7.6-mile roundtrip and takes about 6-8 hours.

West Ridge starts at Kite Lake as a 4.75-mile out-and-back with a 4-6 hour roundtrip. From roughly the middle of Alma, a small Kite Lake sign can be seen – this is the direction to go.

The first five miles in is fairly smooth while the remaining mile may be rough. Be prepared and drive safely during the last mile to Kite Lake.

Activities

Parking and camping fees are to be paid at the trailhead parking lot. There are additional attractions within the surrounding Pike National Forest.

Camping – Visitors can set up tents beside their vehicle or on one of five tent-only spots around Kite Lake that are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Firepits are also available for use.

Fishing – With creeks, streams, and lakes, fishing is a favored pastime for those looking for amazing views and peaceful scenery. Trout are available in both Lake Emma and Kite Lake.

Hiking – Various trails are available in the area, though itโ€™s the Decalibron most sought after. Those looking to bag 4 peaks in one trip are able to traverse the 7.5-mile roundtrip loop and snag this brag-worthy achievement. The majority start with Democrat first, hitting Mount Cameron and Lincolnย in the middle, finishing out at Mt. Bross.

Winter Recreation – Snowmobiles and cross country skiing is popular in the area during the winter months. Be advised to stay within public property and on marked trails.
