In the winter Stagecoach Reservoir freezes over and traditional fishing turns into ice fishing. The reservoir is large and there are usually ice fishers out there every day during the season.
The park is located in Oak Creek, which is a twenty-minute drive from Steamboat Springs. You’ll need an auger (affiliate link) to drill thru the ice, a fishing rod, bait or lure, a fishing license, and an optional ice shelter for staying warm.
There are camping spots available all along the lake, open for RVs in the winter. Snowmobiling is permitted on the lake for ice fishing access, to and from the trailer. It’s not allowed anywhere else in the park. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing are two other winter activities in the park. The park office provides free snowshoe rentals.
There is an entrance fee for the state park for a vehicle or annual pass good for 11-12 months from the month of purchase. Read more about Stagecoach State Park. Find upcoming ice fishing tournaments throughout Colorado.
