The annual Silverton Skijoring event touts itself as the city’s biggest winter party of the year, and it certainly delivers all the excitement you can handle. A lesser-known Nordic sport that combines water skiing, horse racing, and snow skiing, Skijoring is when a horse (or motorcycle) tows a person on skis through a timed obstacle course.
Taking place from Saturday to Sunday, February 15th and 16th, 2025. skiers top 35-45 miles per hour while attempting to catch rings on a baton, navigate tricky jumps, and otherwise avoid a yard sale. The Opening Ceremonies begin at high noon on both days and while festivities wrap up between 4-5 pm, the party continues at Avalanche Brewery.
Silverton Skijoring has been a much-anticipated event since 2010, and each year it seems to draw a larger crowd. Spectators can watch this unique activity for free, but competitors may face a fee. Although family-friendly, you will also find a “party zone” on 12th Street where you can grab an adult beverage if the mood strikes.
If you’d like to brave the course yourself, you can register in advance. With open, sport, and novice categories, you don’t have to let your skill level stop you from competing. Once registered, you’ll participate in two races: one match and one draw, unless you are in the open division, in which case you will compete in two matches.
