Each year, Steamboat hosts its unique closing day event where competitors race down the mountain and (hopefully) pick up enough speed to skim across a pond. The pond skimming contest is one of the best ways to end the 2026-27 ski season, and you’ll see some funny costumes in celebration of saying farewell to the winter months.
As part of the Springalicious week of festivities, Steamboat’s Pond Skim Closing Day celebration will be held on Sunday, April 11th, 2027 (subject to change). You’ll find all the action at the base of the Steamboat Ski Resort near Gondola Square.

If you won’t be participating as a contestant, you’ll still have loads of fun watching people race to the end of the pond. Guests will be treated to a free concert at the last Bud Light Rocks the Boat performance. The event is free for everyone who wants to join and welcomes guests of all ages.
