One of Colorado’s growing summer sports is river surfing. There are many great whitewater parks and rivers around the state where frequent waves enable surfing.
After countless hours driving to crowded beaches, I stumbled upon a new adventure: river surfing. Some of the best waves in Colorado are flowing through our rivers. While late spring through early summer are when these rivers are at their typical highest and fastest, many of the spots mentioned below have manmade features that create whitewater year-round.
It’s the perfect way to catch waves without the hassle of the coast. Picture yourself surfing on a river with beautiful mountain views all around. It’s a unique experience that combines the thrill of surfing with the charm of Colorado’s landscapes.
The Centennial State has some fantastic man-made spots that offer the perfect mix of adventure and fun. Here are my all-time favorite river surfing spots in Colorado that you need to check out:
Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park
The Glenwood Springs river surf point is one of the best surf spots along the Colorado River, although I might be a bit biased as it’s my personal favorite. The waves here are perfect for both beginners and experienced surfers.
The flow in this surf spot can be adjusted for different water levels, making it possible to surf here all year round. The best times to visit Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park though are spring and early summer. Another advantage is that the accessible location makes surfing at this spot fun and effortless!
Palisade Riverbend Park
Palisade Riverbend Park is a gem I discovered while exploring Colorado. This park on the Colorado River offers natural standing waves and is especially well-suited for those who are just starting out or looking for a bit of a challenge.
Natural waves are not as consistent compared to man-made waves in other river surf spots such as Glenwood Springs, but they still offer a fun and maybe even more authentic surfing experience, as the conditions are forever changing.
Spring and early summer are the best times to visit, as the river flow is at its peak and the views are stunning.
Salida Riverside Park
If you’re ever in Salida, stop by the Salida Riverside Park in downtown. The urban surf vibe here is something I’ve grown to love. There are multiple waves to choose from, and “The Office Wave” is my personal favorite.
This spot on the Arkansas River is great for all skill levels, and the family-friendly atmosphere makes it a perfect place to spend a day with friends and family.
Montrose Water Sports Park
Montrose Water Sports Park is a terrific option for first-time river surfing and seasoned surfers. This park is located on the Uncompahgre River and the variety of waves here means there’s something for everyone.
I’ve spent hours here enjoying the engineered waves and the laid-back environment. It’s an excellent spot to immerse yourself in the local surf culture.
Steamboat’s Yampa River
Mountain views and consistent waves? If that sounds like your kind of adventure, the Yampa Valley region is a must-visit. One of the best spots in the state is the Yampa River through downtown Steamboat Springs.
Here, fast-moving waves cater to surfers of all levels. The crown jewel, “Charlie’s Hole”, offers a powerful, consistent wave that’s an absolute must-ride. Spring and early summer are prime times when melting snow raises the water levels, turning this location into a thrilling playground for those seeking a challenge.
Fort Collins’ Poudre River Whitewater Park
Another fantastic river surfing spot in the front range region is the Cache la Poudre River by Fort Collins. The Poudre River Whitewater Park is perfect for first-timers, offering mellow waves that are fun and easy to ride.
Experienced river surfers can also find more challenging waves here. With its scenic setting and ample whitewater, this spot has something for everyone. The best time to visit the Poudre River Park is late spring through summer when the water levels are ideal, ensuring an unforgettable ride.
Denver’s Confluence Park
For those living or visiting Colorado’s capital city, the South Platte River flowing through town is a great spot for river sports like surfing, tubing, and kayaking. Whether you join in on the action or stay dry, head to Confluence Park in Downtown Denver for a day of fun in the sun.
Cherry Creek and the South Platte River combine at Confluence Park where manmade features create reliable whitewater.
If you’re ready to leave the crowded beaches behind and try something new, river surfing is the way to go. It’s not just about the thrill of catching a wave, but about the people you meet, the places you explore, and the memories you create along the way.
The best surfing experiences are closer than you think, nestled in the heart of the mountains, waiting for you to discover them. Pack up your gear, hit the road, and dive into the world of Colorado river surfing. The waves are ready for you, and so is the adventure at your local whitewater park.
