The little unincorporated community of Yellow Jacket, CO had a meager population of 86 at the time of the 2020 U.S. census. West of town the area holds several prehistoric archeological sites, situated in the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

Yellow Jacket sits at 6,900 feet of elevation in Montezuma County. There is a Yellow Jacket Post Office with a zip code of 81335, in operation since 1914. The scary-sounding name was in fact, named for the plethora of yellow jackets near the town’s original site.
