Hoehne is a southern plains town located just northeast of Trinidad, in southeast Colorado. The unincorporated community resides at 5,740 feet above sea level.
The census-designated place (CDP) had a population of only 80 residents in 2020. It’s located in central Las Animas County with a post office and zip code of 81046.
History
A German immigrant by the name of William Hoehne established the town in 1859. He also created the Hoehne Ditch Company, which brought the first mill and threshing machine to the region. He begins farming fruits, notably cherries, strawberries, and apples over 1000 acres. Today it’s still a farming village, but the crop of choice is alfalfa and grass hay.
While minuscule in size today, the peak heyday of Hoehne had a hotel, a Catholic church, multiple shops, and a blacksmith. There was also a train depot by the name of Hoehnes, which concluded in 1967.
