Also known as Stonewall Gap, Stonewall is a mini mountain town located at 7,830 feet in southern Colorado. It’s situated thirty miles west of Trinidad on Colorado State Highway 12.
The unincorporated community was established at a big gap of the Dakota Ridge in Las Animas County. In 2020 the Stonewall Gap had a population of 66.
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains hover above the town. The Middle Fork of the Purgatoire River caused the split in the Stonewall Ridge, which peaks at 8,400 feet.
Going north from Stonewall on the Highway of Legends leads you over Cuchara Pass to the village of Cuchara, and then onto La Veta. The drive is very pretty, cutting through the San Isabel National Forest. Stonewall is surrounded by outdoor recreation.
