Secluded along US-350, the Santa Fe Trail Byway, in Southeast Colorado, Thatcher is all but a ghost town nowadays. A Thatcher Post Office operated from 1883 to 1973 but has since closed up shop. Model Post Office serves Thatcher.

The unincorporated community was given its name. for a local cattleman called M.D. Thatcher. It was briefly known as “Hole-In-The Rock” because a mineral spring was nearby. Thatcher sits in Las Animas County between La Junta and Trinidad.
