{Milliken, CO photo by Jeffrey Beall} Milliken, CO is a small town located in Weld County, 48 miles north of Denver. This historic town, dating back to the 1860s, was built as a trading post along the Denver, Laramie, and Northwestern rail line.
What began as a vibrant railroad community, later was mostly destroyed by a fire and took a decline as the railroad moved out of town. Today the town continues to grow and offers outdoor recreational activities for those visiting. While the town is mostly farmland and cattle ranchers, there is downtown with businesses, the municipal building, and a few restaurants.
Main Attractions
Daniels School – Built in 1911, the Daniels schoolhouse was originally constructed for the needs of the nearby community of Milliken and operated for over 50 years. As the last standing rural brick schoolhouse in Weld County, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
There aren’t many nearby attractions, but Milliken’s location puts it close to larger towns like Longmont (25 miles southwest), Greeley (15 miles east), and Loveland (15 miles west).
Recreation
The South Platte River runs through the southern edge of town which provides plenty of fishing opportunities. The town also is home to two lakes, the Ehrlich Lake and Centennial Lake. Both provide short walking trails and are stocked with fish by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, perfect for casting a line.
