Delta County, created by the Colorado legislature in 1883, recorded a population of 30,952 in 2010. The county was named after a delta of fertile land at the mouth of the Uncompahgre River. Delta is the both largest city and the county seat.
Abundant wilderness acreage is found in Delta County, including Dominguez Canyon Wilderness, Grand Mesa National Forest, and Gunnison Gorge Wilderness. Crawford State Park and Sweitzer Lake State Park also draw visitors.
