One of Vail’s latest luxury hotels, The Hythe, allows guests to not only enjoy slopeside accommodations but also harken the spirit of Vail’s ski legends. This 4-star ski-in/ski-out property is found in Lionshead Village, walking distance to ample shopping, dining and entertainment.
Today, Vail is known for its famed ski slopes and upscale atmosphere. But it also has a rich history that dates back to World War II with ties to the 10th Mountain Division – a group of U.S. troopers who trained in World War II at a place called Camp Hale, just south of Vail Valley.
10th Mountain Division veteran, Pete Seibert, returned to the mountains of Colorado to teach ski lessons and eventually open up Vail Resort with local rancher Earl Eaton. Legend has it, when they both climbed Vail Mountain in 1957, Pete and Earl came across an ancient arrowhead and took this as a good sign to build a ski resort. And so, Vail Ski Resort opened in the winter of 1962 with $5 lift tickets and as they say, the rest is history.
In early December 2021, the hotel recently debuted its $40 million reimagined space (what used to be the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort) in the heart of Lionshead Village. The real star of the show is the way they bring the history of Vail to life and string together its past with an entirely reimagined hotel concept.
Discover how The Hythe conjures up Vail’s ski history and learn about the stories that gave way to the ski legend that Vail is today with a stay at The Hythe Hotel.
4-Star Ski-In/Ski-Out Hotel in Lionshead Village
The Hythe’s namesake, ‘haven,’ is felt in every inch of space as soon as you enter its elegant lobby. Inspired by the camaraderie and hospitality of après ski, a stay at The Hythe is meant to embody what Vail represents and hearken to the pioneering spirits of the past.
Gorgeous designs and details such as local Colorado calacatta marble, quarried from the Rocky Mountains, carved wood features and black stone walls, plus Douglas-fir siding wood panels, drape the interiors of the hotel. Sprinkled with glamorous 60s details, custom furniture, art pieces, and a decadent fireplace, the lobby instantly invites guests to mix and mingle.
Inspired by the origins of Vail and the beauty of the surrounding mountains, guests can instantly feel the mutual love for skiing with details such as historic ski photos, books about the history of Vail, and old ski tools adorning the walls as reminders of how far the sport has come.
The Hythe also features plenty of apres-ski gathering places that feel like secluded corners where you and your friends can reminisce about the day and plan for the next. Meant to inspire fireside chats, every corner offers something to make you feel nostalgic and completely immersed in the area’s history.
Dining and Drinking
The Hythe is home to four separate culinary concepts, Mardie’s Haas, Revel Lounge, 10th Mountain, and Mountain Ration.
Most notably, The Hythe’s farm-to-table dinner concept, Margie’s Haas, is a tribute to the World War II local home cook, Margie Haas. Celebrating her flair for hosting, the restaurant is inspired by troopers from the 10th Mountain Division often driving through the valley on their way to Denver and stopping at the Haas’ home for one of Margie’s home-cooked meals after World War II began.
The restaurant features contemporary alpine cuisine with a fresh approach to classic recipes and ingredients. Led by Executive Chef Patrick Dahms, the menu brings a modernized concept of his 35 years of experience in Alpine cuisine, all inspired by his upbringing in Germany and his travels in Italy and the Austrian Alps.
But before dinner, grab a drink at the Revel Lounge. Serving at the hub for gathering and jubilation, the Revel Lounge is the place to be with unique cocktails and a sultry ambiance that will have guests wanting to linger just a bit longer.
To end the evening, enjoy a nightcap at The Hythe’s lobby bar, 10th Mountain. Partnering with the local 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Company, the bar is a place for guests to gather for an après cocktail or after-dinner drink around the custom lobby fireplace after a long day on the mountain. As guests throw back a few they have the opportunity to learn about the 10th Mountain Division along with the history and importance of whiskey in the region.
In the morning, fuel up for a day on the slopes with a visit to Mountain Ration – the property’s grab & go concept inspired by the 1942 10th Mountain Division M-ration during winter combat or alpine training.
Mountain Wellness Spa
In between your runs, rest and restore with a visit to the Well & Being Spa. It features massages infused with CBD oils, sugar foot scrubs, innovative treatments such as an altitude-combatting oxygen bar, Vail’s only Himalayan salt lounge, as well as recovery treatments, just to name a few.
Energize your day in their state-of-the-art fitness center complete with Peloton bikes and extensive weight machines. Get your laps in or just relax with a good book at the all-seasons pool and hot tub, well furnished with lounge chairs and cabanas.
Boasting 344 rooms, inclusive of 22 suites and 16 spacious residences, the accommodations offer elegant and opulent spaces with a unique modern alpine mountain decor. Luxurious and thoughtful details such as wood, stone, leather, and faux fur bring a welcoming sanctuary to each room.
Feel relaxed with in-room comforts such as warming fireplaces, plush robes and slippers, and spa-like bathrooms where you can really rejuvenate after a long day on the slopes. Some rooms and suites feature large balconies with views of either the village or Vail Mountain.
